Arsenal have opened talks with Atletico Madrid over a deal to sign their centre-back Jose Gimenez, according to the Daily Mail.
But the Spanish side’s £40m asking price already looks likely to be a stumbling block.
Gimenez, aged 21, is a Uruguay international and has established himself as a regular starter alongside compatriot Diego Godin in Diego Simeone’s team, playing 37 matches last season.
The pacy and physical 6ft 1in centre-half is reportedly open to the idea of a move to London if a deal can be struck between the two clubs. Atleti and Arsenal are said to be in ongoing talks as of Wednesday afternoon.
The Gunners area also locked in discussions with Valencia over a deal for Germany defender Shkodran Mustafi, but that moved has stalled.
Arsenal are short of centre-backs at the moment, with captain Per Mertesacker and Brazilian defender Gabriel sidelined through injury and France international Laurent Koscielny not yet back to match fitness after his post-Euro 2016 break.
