Chelsea launch £60m attempt to sign Kalidou Koulibaly

Chelsea have made their move to sign Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The Blues could pay a club-record fee of £60m to bring the Senegal international to Stamford Bridge.

Antonio Conte could then switch to the back-three formation he has favoured in his previous jobs with Italy and Juventus, the report claims. Koulibaly would compete with 35-year-old captain John Terry, England international Gary Cahill and French youngster Kurt Zouma, who is sidelined with a knee injury at present, for a place in Conte’s defence.

Koulibaly, aged 25, has established himself as one of Serie A’s top defenders during his two seasons with Napoli. He made 33 league appearances last term.

He moved to Italy in 2014 from Belgian side Genk, having started his career at French side Metz. The former France Under-20 international has spent two seasons as a professional at each of his clubs to date, so that pattern suggests it is time for him to move on.
